Biography
Drones are a three-piece punk band hailing from Surrey formed in early 2010. The band was spawned from the need of a decent music scene in their hometown, as well as need to make music that was lyrically conscious. Fed up of bands that sing about getting girls and nice haircuts, Drones’ songs address social and political issues that are all too often overlooked in music today. The trio’s influences derive from the likes of Rancid, Anti-Flag, The Clash, Rise Against, NOFX, Gallows and The Distillers.
In April the band organised a DIY video shoot with Daly’s long-time friend Theo Marlow.
The video was advertised online and come 7 o’clock fans stormed into the building to be part of something special. The chaos that can be seen in the band’s first video ‘Shells Fall, Pins Pulled’ was left undirected and was as spontaneous and anarchic as it appears in the final cut. Despite at this point having no backing from a label, the video shot to over 1,000 views on YouTube within a week, with fans, promoters and friends spreading the word. Those in the music video saw the final cut as something to treasure having been a part of what was essentially the dustiest, beer-fuelled concert of their lives.
With more than a handful of songs now under their belts, the band went into the studio to record their first debut LP. Full well knowing that the album would be focused around social and political issues, Drones were experimental with their sound with this in mind – megaphone EQ effects and marching snares are just two examples of how this theme was put across in the recordings. Vocalist Daly George produced the music and drummer, Mitchell Thomas, created all the artwork including handwriting all he linear notes. Towards the end of the recordings, Drones were approached in August by alternative indie label Lockjaw Records who were keen to see the determined band develop and get into the public eye.
