Cheers to NEW music from Katie MF
Katie MF is a punk-ish singer, guitarist and songwriter from London, UK. Over the last few years she's become an integral part of the UK DIY punk scene, making friends in all the wrong places with her captivating live performances.
Since her first proper punk show at the New Cross Inn in 2018, she's played with the likes of Frank Turner, Spanish Love Songs, Pkew Pkew Pkew, Chris Farren, Lightyear, Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun and Lauran Hibberd, whether on her acoustic guitar or with her backing band.
She released two EPs in 2017 & 2018 respectively, then took some time to write and demo the collection of tracks that would become her debut album: False Starts, Open Endings.
FSOE is hard to pin into just one genre, but is at its heart a proper guitar album built on punk principles. The lyrics are thoughtful, the tempo high and the choruses catchy - you’ll want to get your hands in the air and scream along. And maybe have a little cry too.
It opens with Lucky MF, a tune written in the aftermath of a freak car accident where a chunk of metal dislodged from the central reservation and flew through Katie's windscreen, narrowly missing her head. She walked away without a scratch and tried to take it as a sign - but of what?
The remainder of the songs are similarly autobiographical, with past relationships, friendships, the joy of music (particularly the DIY community), politics and patriarchal nonsense all getting their time under the microscope. It builds to a joyous singalong crescendo and ends with the promise that, tomorrow, we'll do it right.
Ultimately this is an album for everyone who likes their guitars loud and their air punched, with driving yet jazz-tinged drums by Tobias Alexandar and top-notch production from Nick Harris. It was mastered by Tim Debney at Fluid.
