Lockjaw Team Update - August 30th

By admin 5 min read

Hey, it’s awesome to meet you. Let’s grab a drink and have a chat!

If there’s one thing we want more of here at Lockjaw it’s to get to know you. Come say ‘hello’ to us at gigs, tell us what you’re listening to and what’s grating on your nerves. The most rewarding thing about this thriving music scene that we’re a part of is meeting people who share our enthusiasm for all things live and loud.

So that you can come and grab us for a chat, we thought we ought to tell you where we are. We’ll be bringing you a fortnightly update from the Lockjaw Team, with our recommendations, tribulations and gig schedules.

Rob (Guildford)

Back to reality, spreadsheets and stock counts for the second week after an epic time at Brakrock, Punk Rock Holiday and a week in Tuscany. Lesley and I nipped off to KOKO last Thursday for the Heavy Music Awards, was brill to see Black Peaks, Milk Teeth and Fever 333, as well as catching up with some friendly faces, not enough fast music but oh well. Last weekend I mugged off any thoughts of Reading Festival to play Upsurge Festival at the NXI with EAT DIRT, supporting Sheer Terror, and spent the Sunday hanging with Almeida and friends whilst we had a BBQ in the torrential rain. This weekend I will be joining my good friend Jamie Lenman for ROCKED UP festival in Corby, where I’ll be flaunting my driving and guitar tech services and enjoying the likes of Arcane Roots, InMe, Press to MECO, ACODA, Palm Reader, Lockjaw dudes FIGHTS AND FIRES and many more. Seems like a good do, if you’re around that end of the world. Darko have also been slowly demoing some tracks which may result in something in the future of humanity.

Listening to:

  • Jamie Lenman - Devolver (love this record)
  • And so I watch you from Afar - Gangs (totally missed this, been rinsing the new stuff and rediscovered the 2011 classic, they are playing in Aldershot in November the day after Propagandhi in London PARTY WEEK.)

Lesley (London)

It’s been hella fun with all the festivals this summer and with all these Lockjaw developments, but mighty good to also be back home to get brewing on some new projects. After getting out of the van, from PRH I walked straight onto the set of the Midwich Cuckoos video for a fun cover song, with our director and all-around awesome dude, Benny P. We filmed this in the back room of a German Bakery that also holds events after hours. Random! More details on the track coming soon. The past few weeks gotten to watch the WIldhearts play the Concorde 2 in Brighton, catch the Heavy Music Awards with Pipes, attend The Book of Mormon and party at a random all night outdoor rave in the middle of nowhere in North London. Espresso martinis were an essential part of most of these events. The Midwich Cuckoos will be playing our last show with Val in London on Friday the 31st September at the Camden Unicorn, as she’ll be heading back to Italy. Sad times, but this should be a good send off party with other female-fronted bands. And I’ll be popping into The Fighting Cocks in Kingston on Saturday 1st September to see what Nosebleed & Rotten Foxes are up to.

Listening to:

  • Knocked Loose - Laugh Tracks I’ve heard this band on the BBC Rock show a couple of times and for some reason thought it was a new Grove Street Families track with more metal. It all clicked when Rob and I took a look at the HMA nominees. I’ve been pulling metalfaces in the gym mirrors to this ever since! … Blat!
  • Rolo Tomassi - Time Will Die And I Will Bury It Just when you thought you knew Rolo Tomassi, they pulled this one out of the bag. Loads of atmosphere and depth. This one needs loads of spins and maybe an easy afternoon with a glass of wine.
  • Bash Brothers - Life Lessons AKA Super safe bros! One of the several bands that I got to meet at festivals this summer. We’ve had this in the distro and I’m catching up with it… mind you I can’t run that fast. I’ll just sit down and listen.

Sarah (Manchester)

Hey folks! I’ve had a relatively calm week, but I had a great time watching Manchester hardcore act Iron Drugs at the weekend - they’re killer live but hardly ever play; well worth looking out for. The gig I’m most excited for this week is recently-reunited Uniforms. If you’re not familiar with them, they’re a proper gruff old-school pop-punk group - they were one of my highlights of this year’s Manchester Punk Fest. They’ve just released an awesome come-back 7’’ on Make-That-A-Take and TNS Records called Reasons To Breathe that I’d highly recommend. They’re playing around the country but I’m catching them with Don Blake, Hummer, Bear Trap and Code Break on September 9th at the Eagle Inn in Salford - come say hi! Over at Shout Louder we’ve been doing a massive festival round-up, with reviews (well, flashbacks) of KNRD Fest, Brakrock Ecofest and Punk Rock Holiday. I’m gutted festival season’s over, but there’s plenty of club shows to make up for it.

Listening to

  • Uniforms - Searchlights

Joelle (Antwerp)

What have I been up to since Punk Rock Holiday? Well.. I thought I was going to get some time to rest after the summer festivities but I’ve managed to keep myself busy by going back to the daily grind, recording Less Talk, More Records podcasts for Punkrockradio.ca, with my partner in crime Judy, and I’ve just interviewed my first band for Skatepunkers.net. The last podcast is all about the Swedes. Despite of all that to keep me occupied, I’m already getting stir-crazy by the lack of gigs and travelling. So I’m headed to Katrineholm (SWE) to catch the final Adhesive show on Sept 1st.

Listening to

  • No Dividers - Left To Wither A new Swedish band from the Gothenburg area that brings a mix of skate and gruff punk. FFO: Steve And The Alcoholics, Hold Hands
