Lockjaw Team Update: October

The most rewarding thing about this thriving music scene that we’re a part of is meeting people who share our enthusiasm for all things live and loud. So that you can come and grab us for a chat, we thought we ought to tell you where we are!

We’ll be bringing you a monthly update from the Lockjaw Team with our recommendations, tribulations and gig schedules.

…. And there goes the summer! If you know me, you’ll know that I’ll be doing everything to grab those last rays of warm sunshine, or distracting myself with friends and gigs. Anything to keep my mind off the impending cold and lack of sunshine. In the past month I’ve been preoccupying myself by eating for England, seeing Wild Tales support Soeur in Aldershot and a couple of theatre shows: The Book of Mormon & Kinky Boots. Hasa diga eebowai! And there’s so much goodness coming up this month! First of all we’ve got Drones playing the Camden Roundhouse with the Screech Bats and SILVA. I’ll also be catching Black Peaks at the Fighting Cocks with Pipes and Sam from Wild Tales. Then we’ve got The Human Project and PMX at The New Cross Inn, and the mighty charity all dayer Might As Well Fest 4, featuring The Barstool Preachers, Aerial Salad, EAT DIRT and plenty more. Every year the MAWF team work hard to raise funds and awareness for charity, so please get involved and help them with this year’s chosen charity, The Rainbow Trust. Finally, I’ll be playing the Hell Hath No Fury all dayer in Bristol with my band Midwich Cuckoos, alongside In Evil Hour, Casual Nausea and more. I’m really looking forward to this one as we will have some cool surprises (you may know from my last update that our singer, Val, has moved back to Italy). We’ve been keeping busy behind the scenes on this one… more to come!

September’s flown by like a punk-rock hurricane. Highlights included a red-wine fuelled evening of Japanese grindcore with PALM and Friendship; Tim Loud and Goodbye Blue Monday playing a gig in my kitchen (we had a serious time) and having to up my face-painting and costume-design game to film a music video with Fair Do’s (oops, was that a secret?). There’s been heaps on at my site Shout Louder too: October’s my favourite time of year: crisp Autumn air, toffee apples and Halloween overload. I’m also swimming in top-shelf punk shows! You will find me singing my heart out in Warrington on October 6th for PMX, The Human Project and Fair Do’s (so much shred, my heart’s gonna explode). I’m also stoked to catch Jeff Rosenstock, Vanilla Pod’s final Manchester show and Brassick, Fair Do’s and Pat Butcher in Oldham. Most excitingly, I’ll be shipping off to Denmark for a couple of days with Revenge of The Psychotronic Man, who are flying 30 or so Brits out to Copenhagen and Aalborg for their final Euro mainland shows (rent-a-crowd, anyone?). I’ll get to party with my buds in Forever Unclean and stare creepily lovingly at Stöj Snak, with whom I have a mild obsession. Any Danish pals want to come party with me?

Listening to

  • Fullcount - The Motion This was a banger the first time I heard it, but it just keep growing and growing - I’m obsessed now
  • Tim Loud - What Am I? Tim’s irreverent, skillful style of antifolk songwriting is completely irresistible. I strongly recommend checking out his new album Salvation
  • Captain Trips - Changes these South Coast skate-punks have got a new EP out this month and it’s a BANGER

Here I was thinking life would become a little more slow paced after a hectic festival-filled summer. Wrong! After going to Sweden and interviewing Adhesive before their last show there was a lack of shows, so work swallowed me whole Fortunately, I’ve had a little break from the daily grind by going to Anders’ birthday party in Erpe-Mere (BE) to witness For I Am, Bare Teeth, Goodbye Blue Monday, The Affect Heuristic and Darko. Definitely #lockjawcrew there. Last week, Judy and I recorded another podcast, all about bands we’ve recently discovered or that have new music out. As usual, it contains a lot of giggling, inside jokes and even singing! The other day I witnessed the mind blowing performance of a rockstar called Chris Farren, plus the likes of Jeff Rosenstock, which made for a night of dancing and beer. There’s a surprising amount of great gigs coming up in the next few weeks, bringing the likes of Frenzal Rhomb, Muncie Girls and PUP within cycling distance of my house in Antwerp, which is always a win. Cedric (Oostkamp)

Had a great evening at Anders' birthday party with the Darkonians. Got to know Sean's brother Graham and the secret of mascara for men. Long days at work because of deadlines, but found the time to learn this beauty: Youtube. Also, playing on the beat is different from playing before the beat.

Listening to

  • Gavin Osborne - UK On my Spotify since 2015 but still very much unknown. Awesome singer/songwriter, tells stories like stories should be told. “You’re only as old as you feel they say, and Albert was feeling ok”.
  • The Human Project - Clarion Call Because vinyl arrived and it's fantastic.

Darko had a cracking little Belgium trip for Anders’ birthday, where I met up with Joelle and Cee, The Affect Heuristic, Bare Teeth, For I Am and Goodbye Blue Monday. Coming up, I’ll be at the Captain Trips EP launch on Saturday 6th October. It’s a killer line up including Laughing In the Face Of, Laymans Terms and Tape It Shut. The week after, I’m up at the New Cross Inn for The Human Project and PMX on the Thursday, then Darko fly out to Austria on the 12th for Seewinkel Noise Factory DIY Festival 6.0 at EKH Vienna, with Oi Polloi, Youth Avoiders, Kaput Krauts, Todeskommando Atomsturm, Kettenhund, Kruger and Janosch.
