Prey Drive - Neon God (EP) Out Now!
‘Neon God’ is Prey Drive’s first release with label Lockjaw Records and comprises five new tracks following themes of hopelessness, fear of an ever-growing technological future, and our dependence on devices like our phones and the internet to actually be able to live in it and not feel like you’re missing out.
From the 5-track EP, listeners can expect a powerhouse of authoritative rock riffs intertwined with intricate mathematical lead lines and a dream-like ambience, with soaring vocals soaked in canorous harmonies. The lyrics reflect on self-frustration and the personal challenges of adhering with society’s expectations – something we can all relate to.
[ux_image id="47899"]Vocalist Bradley Smith explains how the EP title and theme came about; “My favourite lyric of all time is from Simon and Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence – ‘and the people bowed and prayed to the Neon God they made’. It always conjured up so many thoughts when I heard it. I always translated it to have a double meaning. I thought it was saying that ‘WE’ created religion, but it was also commenting on the impact that Television and the advertising industry has on us. This lyric was written in the 60’s and I believe is even more relevant today.”
He adds, “I used the phrase ‘Neon God’ in this instance to describe the modern mentality. Mainly mobile phones and the way they make you addicted to following companies, people and influencers who paint out a perfect life for you to aspire to and constantly compare yourself to. In addition, I also used ‘Neon God’ to mean the inviting lights of a city, promising a good time.”
